Nothing to do until the annual Burleith picnic? Why not join me for a stroll around our neighborhood to learn about presidential candidates and grandchildren, World War II generals, U.S. astronauts, spies, and much more.

We’ll visit all five of Burleith’s call boxes, various addresses that will be mentioned on the plaques of the refurbished call boxes, as well as some of the locales featured in the upcoming book Images of America, Burleith, Washington, D.C., written and edited by Ross Schipper and me and published by Arcadia Publishing Company.

The tour starts at Hardy Middle School’s west entrance (35th and T Streets NW) at 2 pm and ends at Whitehaven Park (Whitehaven Parkway and 37th Street) at 4 pm just in time for the picnic festivities. The cost is a mere $10 per person, all of which goes to the Burleith Community Fund to benefit the call box restoration project. No advance registration is necessary.
